Boulder

I grew up in Boulder, and in retrospect, the town has had a big influence on who I am. Coming from Boulder, I could not help but try cycling at some point. So when I was 7, and my dad was starting to race, I decided that I wanted to give it a try too. One race was all it took; I was hooked!

Cyling

Being a professional cyclist has to be one of the best ways to explore the world in the shortest amount of time. Lots of forgettable airports, hotels, and hostels, but memorable scenes of vistas, castles, and coastlines. However, my favorite sights were the mountain roads, in Girona, Spain especially. I loved marking up a map with all of the roads I had ridden and found a challenge in riding up to the highest altitude I could from my home. My best was a 120 mile round-trip from Girona to 2000 meters: Valter 2000.

Osteoporosis

Almost by accident, I found out that I had been ignoring a part of my health by pursuing cycling since I was 7 years old. It only took a slow-speed crash on a wet cobblestone sidewalk to break my femur. It was an intertrochanteric fracture at the hip, which was an alarming fracture for a non-traumatic crash. When I followed up with a DEXA scan to examine my bone density, the scan revealed a "T-score" indicating osteoporosis in my hip and lower back.

I recently did a patient testimonial with Panorama Orthopedics discussing my successful treatment under Dr. Paul Miller. Check out the video on YouTube.

Research

As I began looking for another career following cycling, I first found myself intrigued by research problems in computer science. I recently completed my PhD in May 2019 at the University of Colorado advised by Dr. Richard Han. I've since realized my desire to engage in work with a direct connection to improve human health. I hope to pivot my research interests to a medical field while starting on the necessary steps to eventually serve patients as a physician. In my first steps in this new direction, I began a post-doc in computational neuroscience at Brown University working on a human brain model (Human Neocortical Neurosolver) and am currently in the process of applying to medical schools for 2020.

Medicine.
